I know... these are unlike anything I have done before. But Katie inspired a new kind of freedom to play and express those "darker" corners. She and Cindy laughingly called these my "angry men" series. The question was: why men and why angry?? Something to explore...
All paintings are oil Shiva sticks on textured, gessoed fabric and measure about 8x10.
I would love to hear your comments!

Deb,
These are wonderful. I can see Katie's influence here - but you have definitely made them your own.
Lovely things going on here at your blog, lady. I've missed you.

i'm glad you posted these - i agree with joanne, complexity of character is a really good description of them.

Ohhhh, Deb! What were you thinking about (perhaps not consciously)when you were painting these faces? They may be angry, but they are so different from the now very common stylized, wide-eyed female faces out there - you may start a new trend! ~Carolann

Deb; I can see I've missed out on a lot here in my blogging hiatus. Great journal pages - WOWSA!
Also; do like those "angry man" faces. I, for one, don't do happy faces - they always turn out pensive and deep in thought. Life doesn't always make us happy and smiling does it? I love what you did! Glad you enjoyed your time in CA! xxoo Marilyn

Yes I can see why they would call them 'angry men'... they do look kind of angry, kind of scary but they are good paintings.

Thanks for stopping by and leaving such a nice note, it led me to your blog. I am having such a good time drooling over your art this morning.
These faces are very emotive. Love them all, but especially the last one...the expression, the eyes...everything!
Enjoy your day and make some fab art!

You need a man to sort this out. Hmmmm, taking them in order: (1) Troubled and a bit sad. His wife doesn't understand him. (2) Angry and powerless to do anything about it. His boss unjustly berated him - again. (3) Wistful resignation. He realizes that this is all he will ever be. (4) The afterlife. He just wouldn't listen - (no ears) - And now there's a price to pay.
Hope that helps. - Well, you asked. :)
Anyway, I love the color mixes and textures. They are very interesting pieces, and I like the varied emotions.

They may be sort of angry, but I think their faces show complexity of character.
